Choose Steel Instead of Aluminum Garage Doors

01/12/2014 Back To Blog

The paradox about steel and aluminum overhead doors is that they are both made of metallic materials but they have a complete different reaction to natural elements, diverse characteristics, properties and strengths. They belong to the same family but they are nothing like brothers and sisters. Metal doors had their booming period during the last century and although aluminum had its glorious days as well, steel had prevailed. There is certainly a reason for that and it has to do with the capacities of each material and the expectations of modern people.

Why getting steel garage doors is preferable

At older times, when technology hadn't reached its current high peak, consumers had limited choices. Many of them settled with aluminum garage doors due to their lower prices and the fact that this material doesn't erode. Over the years, things have changed. There have been major changes in manufacturing and steel doors, which were more expensive but still eroded, gained territory because they were processed accordingly. Today, people have a choice and, thus, a say. Many would still get aluminum doors for their cheap garage door prices, especially those living in areas with mild weather conditions but those living in climates, which need resistant, strong door panels would select galvanized steel.

Steel is much stronger and can resist fierce winds and harsh weather. It can be insulated and, thus, it would be thicker. In this case, you would need stronger garage door springs and openers but you will have a very powerful system, which will also insulate the whole house properly. At older times, people didn't need such strong doors and knew that they had to maintain steel often to avoid corrosion. Today, when such problems have been effaced and garage door repairs eliminated, people started reconsidering. After all, today they need to fortify their homes the best way they can and, thus, need the strongest possible garage system.
